A control system battery (10) for controlling a state of charge of a battery of the hybrid vehicle (12) comprising: a detection device (30) to determine an operating state of the vehicle or a state planned operating vehicle; and a controller (20, 22) for setting a target state of charge of the battery (12) based on the operating state of the vehicle or the expected operating condition of the vehicle, the level at which the controller (20, 22) operable to set a target level of state of charge at a first level during a mobile operating state of the vehicle and a second level during a stationary state of vehicle operation or in advance of the vehicle operating in the stationary operating state vehicle; and the second level is closer than the first level of an upper limit of a maximum state of charge.
