The surgical management of end-stage ankle arthritis remains a controversial area with two main treatment modalities, total ankle arthroplasty and ankle arthrodesis. Both are seemingly employed in similar clinical scenarios with, in the most part, beneficial outcomes. Deciding between the two can often be challenging and as a result decision-making may be inconsistent. This review seeks to unravel and distil the core concepts and key considerations when choosing between ankle arthroplasty and arthrodesis.
