TV broadcasting at 40 GHz

Possibilities for MVDS (microwave video distribution services) in the 40.5-42.5 GHz band, allocated for local television in the UK, are considered. Despite limitations due to currently available technology and attenuation by rain it is possible to obtain a useful cell size of about 3.8 km; using a monolithic low noise amplifier in the receiver would increase this to 5.6 km. Coverage would be achieved using a transmitter with a sector horn on one side of the cell, and transmissions would use frequency modulation. If twenty channels are needed for each cell then there are a total of six frequency sets available. Using these it is possible to provide continuous coverage of areas up to about 40 km across, or to serve all of the towns in more rural areas. It should therefore be possible to make spectrum available to nearly all Local Delivery Operators who wish to provide local television using MVDS.
