Hypersaline Wastewater Treatment by CaCl2-Tolerant Bacteria-Supplement in Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed Reactor

2009
The performances of diosgenin wastewater treatment by CaCl 2 -tolerant bacteria-supplement in UASB (reactor B) and traditional UASB withnot CaCl 2 -tolerant bacteria-supplement (reactor A) were investigated under operation conditions in this study. The starting-up phase showed that CaCl 2 -tolerant bacteria-inducement had not only improved the COD removal efficiency, but also shortened the start-up time. On starting-up time 23 days, the COD removal efficiency of reactor B was up to 98.11%. During running-up phase, CaCl 2 -tolerant bacteria-supplement in UASB could improve the sludge activities, keep higher biomass and enhance the anti-VLR capacity, especially the salinity exceeded 2.0% CaCl 2 . Finally, UV-vis spectrum and HPLC for wastewater samples analyses both indicated that the reactor B process was very effective in removing most of the organic pollutants than reactor A. Moreover, UV-vis spectrum and HPLC for wastewater samples analyses showed there were still a few undegradable substance, this agreed with the COD of wastewater wasn't removal completely after anaerobic bioreactor.
