Biometric Fingerprint Based Application Programming Interface for Students Integrated Library Access Identification

2019
The traditional approach of students’ identity verification at libraries using cards posed some security vulnerabilities, resulting in loss of cards, forgery, and misplacement.  The system is very ineffective, inefficient, and prone to errors and difficulties in identifying information on the card when it gets older and worn out or faded with time. Fingerprint authentication system has been used to verify the true identity of students gaining entry into the university libraries. This was the reason for developing and implementing an improved student integrated library access identification scheme using biometric fingerprints. An Application Programming Interface (API), the Web based University Registration Interface (URI), and the Biometric Standalone Application (BSA) software were developed using .NET framework 4.5.1 with C# object-oriented programming language. From simulation results, the developed system was able to verify 115 out of117 students and achieved a high efficient verification accuracy level of 98.29%. This was better than the same work of Akinduyite et al. (2013) that achieved 97.43% (detected only 114 out of 117 students). Also, the developed API scheme with an execution time of 4.02 seconds when compared to the 16.57 seconds of the traditional card scheme, had a 75.74% improvement.
