In this article we report on a study on the competency "solving problems through the application of the ideas which prepare for multiplication and Division". The aim of this research was to investigate what are the strategies and procedures that students of childhood cycle build from problem-situations which involving this competency provided in Provinha Brasil. The study is qualitative and was inspired by the research participant research-action mode which is constituted by the cycles of planning-actionobservation-reflection in progressive complexity levels. The results show that although the algorithms can assist in agility of calculations involving multiplication and Division its early use may affect the evolution of the meaning of multiply and divide.
