Personal computers in bridge design

1985
This paper traces the development of trends in the use of computers for engineering design since 1970 with specific reference to bridge design. The features of a typical personal computer and graphics capability in particular are reviewed with respect to suitability for use in a design office and integration with other computing facilities. The application of personal computers in bridge design is discussed with reference to examples of 2d and 3d structural analysis and the use of spreadsheet programs. Brief references are made to the use of personal computers for information storage and retrieval and their use for project management. The paper concludes that the personal computer is a very flexible tool in engineering environments (a).
