Simulated callosal lesions in a neural model of left and right hemispheric regions

1999
Currently, how the brain recovers from acute damage is poorly understood. Our goal in this study was to use a neural model of the left and right hemispheric regions connected via a corpus callosum for exploration of the effects of callosal lesions. We wanted to determine how pre-lesion lateralization of function and the assumed nature of callosal influences affected post-lesion performance, individual hemispheric contribution to recovery, and regional activation levels. The overall results with lesions to our model support the hypothesis that callosal effects are predominantly excitatory.
