Clinical significance of the combined endotoxin and C-reactive protein in determining pulmonary gram-negative bacterial infection

2012
Objective To evaluate the clinical significance of the combined endotoxin and C-reactive protein(CRP) in determining pulmonary gram-negative bacterial infection. Methods The blood specimens of 48 confirmed patients with pulmonary gram-negative bacterial infection were taken and endotoxin and CRP test was conducted. The results were compared with the normal healthy group. Results The levels endotoxin and CRP in patients with pulmonary gram-negative bacterial infections were significantly higher than those in the normal control group. The level of endotoxin in moderate and severe infection group was higher than that of the mild infection group, while CRP had no obvious difference. The two indicators of the infection group had significant differences after anti-infection treatment. Conclusion The combined endotoxin and CRP technique can improve the diagnosis of pulmonary gram-negative bacterial infections, objectively evaluate the severity of the infection, guide the rational clinical application of antibiotics, and prevent the prevalence of illness or overuse of drugs.
