A New Generic Arrangement for Incaspis and Mainland South American Alsophis and the Status of Two Additional Peruvian Species

1977
HILODRYAS simonsi Boulenger was placed in the synonymy of P. elegans (Tschudi) by Amaral (1929) because its relatively short snout and frontal fell within the range of variation of the latter. Parker (1932) reported a second specimen of simonsi and considered the species distinct, but referred it to the genus Leimadophis on the basis of its ungrooved postdiastemal teeth. Schmidt and Walker (1943a) concurred with Amaral (1929), but subsequent authors (Peters, 1960; Peters and Orejas-Miranda, 1970) have followed Parker's arrangement. This generic allocation is unsatisfactory in view of current studies.
