Wave drift forces affecting on maneuvering of a ship - theory and pmm test results

This paper discusses an innovative model test that has been carried out to know wave drift forces affecting on maneuvering of a ship relating to dynamic positioning system, as well as a theory of wave drift force including wave drift damping and wave drift added mass. Some examples of experiments done in Ocean Engineering Wave Basin, Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo are shown, including Planar Motion Mechanism (PMM) tests not only in still water but also in waves. Details of PMM tests in waves are also discussed.
