Automated membrane model creation

2000
Presents an extension to CardioWave, the authors' modular simulation system for the Bidomain Equations, which allows new membrane modules to be added by parsing a simple text file of equations, eliminating the need for the user to write source code. CardioWave can simulate wavefront conduction in geometries ranging from single fibers to 3-D regions of myocardium and is designed to run on modern parallel computers, including dedicated supercomputers and clusters of workstations. The automated membrane module generator presented here accepts Latex- or MathML-formatted equations as input and produces C-language source code as output. The membrane generator also allows for computational acceleration through look-up table interpolation. Such enhancements are implemented with minimal user intervention. This automated generation of membrane modules simplifies the process of creating highly realistic, highly complex, simulations of wavefront dynamics in the heart.
