Natural assumptions for tsunami hazard on the coast of the Khabarovsk Krai and Primorye

2011
In this work the problems of assessment of the tsunami hazard on the southern coast of regions of the Far Eastern federal district are considered. As risk factors we use the next parameters: the relative position of the epicenters of tsunamigenic earthquakes and coasts, underwater topography of the coast, the degree of closeness of the bays investigated, the presence or an absence of a beach and the first wide marine terrace, and characteristics of river mouths on this coast. For all the factors studied the expert evaluations of their role in the formation of tsunamis. The characteristics of the underwater topography, location of the tsunamigenic earthquake epicenters relative to coasts and bays are evaluated as the zonal factors, and the characteristics of the marine terraces and river valleys are considered as local risk factors. For the first time for the coasts of Khabarovsk Krai and Primorye the consequences of historical tsunamis (in particular, damage to the coasts, number of ships moved by tsunami waves from the open sea to the river mouths and on beaches, coast erosion, as well as eyewitness accounts) were taken into account. The description of tsunami hazard factors is preceded by an analysis of zones of the potential earthquake sources (PES) as sources of possible tsunamigenic earthquake sources.
