Captain Domenic A. Calicchio Award: Acknowledging selfless contributions at Training Center Yorktown

2012
This article tells the story of the sinking of the S/S Marine Electric on Feb. 12, 1983. Thirty four individuals were on board when it set sail, and only three survived. The 605-foot-long, U.S.-flagged bulk cargo ship, tragically capsized, plummetted and sank about 30 miles east of the Chincoteague, Va. coast, during a winter storm. A Marine Board investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard was convened a few days after the ship went down. One of the members of the board was Captain Domenic A. Calicchio. Captain Calicchio believed in the "Old Man's Code" - do what was right, always tell the truth, don't compromise with what you know to be right. He used this code throughout his life and brought it to the marine casualty report on the sinking of the Marine Electric. The Captain Domenic A. Calicchio Award was created in 2007, and dedicated to the U.S. Coast Guard Training center on Yorktown, Va. It is awarded to those graduates who exhibit the professional and personal traits noted in the award, and demonstrated by Captain Domenic A. Calicchio during his life.
