Ion scattering measurements of rutile TiO2(110)-(1 × 1) surface relaxation

Abstract The height of the oxygen atoms which lie above the six-fold coordinated titanium atoms on the (1 × 1) surface of TiO 2 (110) rutile has been determined by ion-surface scattering. The height is in excellent agreement with recent X-ray diffraction measurements, and is less than predicted by minimum energy calculations.
