INVESTIGATION ON TOBACCO AND ALCOHOL USE AMONG PRIMARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ZHEJIANG PROVINCE

Objective:To understand the status of alcohol and tobacco use among primary and middle school students from Zhejiang Province,and to provide evidence for developing effective prevention strategies on tobacoo and alcohol abuse.Methods:Standardized sample selection process of cluster-sampling was used for the investigation in 9925 students chosen randomly from primary and middle school in Zhejiang Province.Results:Totally 9147 valid questionnaires were returned,and the efficient rate was 92.2%.Among 9147 students,16.7% used tobacco while 56.4% tried alcohol;11.6% and 43.2%,respectively tried tobacco or drinking before they were 13 years old.Conclusion:Alcohol and tobacco use is popular among primary and middle school students in Zhejiang Province,and tends to a younger age,which calls due attention.In order to prevent and control tobacoo and alcohol use,necessary intervention should be implemented among students according to their age,gender and other characteristics.
