A Coverage Hole Recovery Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks Based on Cuckoo Search

In wireless sensor networks, due to the energy depletion or failure of the sensor nodes, original covered area will not be covered by any nodes, which becomes the coverage hole and affect the coverage performance of the network. Existing coverage hole recovery algorithms are easy to fall into local optimal solution. The cuckoo search algorithm uses a long distance search to effectively jump out of local optima. Therefore, we proposed a coverage hole recovery algorithm based on cuckoo search which repairs coverage hole accurately through the global search to ensure the coverage performance of the network. To the best of our knowledge, the cuckoo search is the first work to repair the coverage hole in wireless sensor networks. The simulation result shows that this method can effectively jump out of the local optima, and quickly and effectively repair the coverage hole. Finally, we analyze the influence of the number of nodes and the Gaussian noise to the network performance.
