Research on separation and emulsification of bio-oil

2010
In order to improve the quality of bio-oil for its application in internal-combustion engine,a series of bio-oil emulsification experiments with 0# diesel fuel and E93# gasoline is carried out.1-octanol is chosen as surfactant. The water content, acidity, viscosity, heat of combustion and stability of emulsified oil are explored. The results show that the emulsified oil exhibits low acidity, low water content, stability and good combustion property, which maybe expected to replace diesel fuel or gasoline.Otherwise,bio-oil could be separated effectually by the emulsification process:most light organic fractions of bio-oil enter the emulsion phase;meanwhile, most organic acids and heavy fractions of bio-oil such as pyrolitic lignin are retained in water phase. The process is a novel way for bio-oil refining due to its simplicity, convenience and possibility for the commercialized appliction of bio-oil.
