Oncologic outcomes of partial versus radical nephrectomy for unilateral Wilms tumor.

2011
9561 Background: According to the Children's Oncology Group (COG) and International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP), the recommended surgical management for unilateral Wilms tumor (UWT) is radical nephrectomy (RN). However, recent data demonstrate that when oncologically feasible, renal preserving surgery decreases the likelihood of chronic renal disease and associated comorbidities. Thus, we analyzed outcomes of those undergoing partial nephrectomy (PN) compared to RN for UWT. Methods: We searched PubMed using: “Wilms tumor,” “Nephroblastoma,” “PN” and “Nephron Sparing Surgery.” Reviewing citations to eliminate repeat reports we found 115 patients who had PN for UWT. These reports were analyzed for: stage, recurrence, recurrence location, overall survival (OS) and time to event. 82 cases had adequate data to analyze. In comparison, the same endpoints were collected on all children who had RN for UWT from 1985-2010 at Childrens Med Ctr Dallas. Results: Of the 82 PN patients, 64 were stage I, 10 stage...
