Ultrasound technology has been successfully used for non-destructive testing of metallic materials and in medical diagnosis for many years. The thought to use this technology also for quality assurance of cement-bound construction materials readily suggests itself. The methods currently used by the construction industry for quality assurance of fresh concrete, however, cover only partial areas, are relatively imprecise, difficult to reproduce and unsuitable for modern quality management. Most of all, they provide only a snapshot of the materials properties and do not represent the continuous setting process. Reliable statements, for example on the mode of action of admixtures, cannot be obtained by these methods.
