Pressure vessels are products with a wide range of applications. Today, it can be said that pressure vessel exploitation safety is at a very high level. This was achieved by implementing extensive experience into standards and regulations. However, pressure vessel failures still occur during exploitation and represent a considerable practical problem.In this paper, failure of a pressure vessel used for chlorine transportation during exploitation is analysed. Defects were discovered in the pressure vessel design, manufacturing and testing stages, which lead to reduced exploitation safety. The influence of temperature and defects in the welded joint on stress magnitudes in pressure vessel walls were the main focus od this analysis. The procedure used top analyse these effects can be applied to all gases which are stored in pressure vessels in both liquid and gas phases.
