Esta afeccion esta causada por la acumulacion de bilirrubina en la piel, membranas mucosas y escleroticas, haciendo que los pacientes afectados presenten una coloracion amarillenta en dichas zonas del cuerpo. La ictericia neonatal se refiere a aquella que ocurre durante los primeros dias de vida, pudiendo ser fisiologica, la cual se resuelve de manera espontanea, o patologica, cuya ausencia de tratamiento puede derivar en graves consecuencias. Es el signo clinico mas frecuente en el periodo neonatal y una de las principales causas de hospitalizacion de recien nacidos. Aproximadamente el 50% de los recien nacidos a termino y el 80% de los bebes prematuros se ven afectados por ictericia durante la primera semana de vida.
