Abstract Placental malaria (PM) causes placental insufficiency, leading to reduced birth weight (BW). Placental mtDNA copy number (mtDNA-CN) and relative telomere length (RTL) have been described as potential biomarkers for placental insufficiency and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).
