Community screening campaign for Strongyloides stercoralis among Latin American immigrants in Spain

2018
Abstract Immigrants coming from endemic Strongyloides stercoralis countries have been described as having high prevalence rates of chronic infection. Most published data are regarding immigrants coming from sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia. In this manuscript we describe a communitarian screening campaign for Strongyloides stercoralis amongst Latin American immigrants in Spain. This study dose not only provide information about Strongyloides stercoralis prevalence, but it also shows how communitarian targeted screening campaigns for Latin American immigrants could be an effective measure to improve Strongyloides stercoralis diagnosis and treatment avoiding potential fatal hyperinfection syndrome in immunosuppressed individuals and potential local transmission.
