Possible nucleon resonance admixture in the deuteron

Abstract Low-energy, apparently resonant pπ + systems are found to emerge when deuterons are struck by high energy photons. These could be Δ(1236) “spectators” set free from a hypothetical virtual ΔΔ state of the deuteron occurring with ∼3% probability. The possibility of other interpretations of this observation is also explored.
