The impact of cigarette smoking on treatment outcome in metastatic pancreatic cancer patients.

2014
e15183 Background: Cigarette smoking is a known risk factor for pancreatic cancer. However, the impact of cigarette smoking on survival in patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer (mPCa) is unknown. Here, we hypothesized that cigarette smoking adversely affected the survival of mPCa patients (pts) who received chemotherapy. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review on pts with mPCa between 2000-2012 managed at our institution. We analyzed 1 year overall survival (OS) comparing patients who were ‘current smokers’ that included pts who quit within ≤ 2 yr of diagnosis vs. ‘non-smokers’ that included pts who never smoked and those who quit > 2 yr prior to diagnosis. Results: 445 patients were identified (“non-smoker” = 311, “current smokers” = 134). The majority of deaths were identified as cancer related deaths (91.9%). “Current smokers” were younger, with a better ECOG performance status and less cardiac history. Among pts who received chemotherapy (CTX) (n=343), the survival of “current smokers” was s...
