Identifying cost performance indicators for a logistics model for vessel trains

Abstract The H2020 project NOVIMAR introduces the innovative concept of the vessel train (VT) that is inspired by the truck platooning concept and aims “to adjust the waterborne transport such that it can make optimal use of the existing short-sea and inland waterways and vessels (…).” This chapter focuses on the identification of the most appropriate economic performance indicators (PIs) for measuring cost performance of waterborne transport with or without the VT and of the different VT constellations. The PIs were selected starting from desk research, the objectives of NOVIMAR project and both the perspective of the vessel owners, assuming also operating the ship, and the cargo owners.
