allo - C -Furanosides (VI, β- C -Ribose)

This chapter reviews the synthesis of allo - C -furanosides. Approaches include nucleophilic, radical, and transition metal–catalyzed substitutions at the anomeric carbon, reduction of anomeric hemiketals, hydrogenation of exo -glycals, stereospecific and stereoselective cyclization reactions, and dihydroxylation of 1,4-dihydrofurans. The major stereocontrol elements are bicyclic induction, Woerpel 1,3- cis induction, kinetic cyclization, thermodynamic control, and stereospecific substitution.
