PI and fuzzy logic controller based tip speed ratio control for smoothening of output power fluctuation in a wind energy conversion system

2016
The major challenge associated with wind energy conversion system (WECS) is variation of power coefficients along with the tip speed ratios (TSR), which are related to wind speed variations. TSR must be held at its optimal value to keep power coefficients (Cp) at its maximum value, by controlling WT torque (τWT) at incoming wind speeds using any artificial intelligent (AI) and conventional controller as proportional-integral (PI) controller. In this paper, TSR control method for a fixed-pitch wind turbine (WT) is introduced for dynamic nature of wind speed. A PI control scheme is proposed and performance of the WECS is analyzed under this control. Furthermore, a fuzzy logic (FL) controller is designed for system performance analysis under the dynamic wind speed conditions. Both proposed control scheme is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink software and investigated. A comparative analysis is also presented between PI and FL control scheme with the help of simulation results. After a detailed analysis and investigation, it is concluded that FL based TSR controller gives better performance under the variable wind speed.
