The participation of proximal and/or contacting cells in the control of development and differentiation of various tissues, including liver, is now well-established (Edelman, 1987). Cell interactions can process through the production of soluble factors or the deposition of extracellular matrix components or directly, through cell-cell recognition signal(s) located on the plasma membranes.
