Low-complexity carrier phase recovery algorithm for M-ary QAM based on phase search acceleration by minimum first-order distance

Abstract This paper proposes a novel phase noise estimation method based on two stage blind phase search algorithm with minimum first order distance (FOD) approximation. The relationship between the rotation phase and FOD is obtained, which can be used to accelerate the speed of phase searching and reduce the complexity. The comparison of the proposed scheme with other different phase recovery methods is analyzed. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated experimentally in the 80 Gbit/s coherent transmission systems. It proved that the usage of FOD approximation in carrier phase estimation can reduce the complexity of phase estimation for arbitrary modulation by similar performance with traditional BPS scheme.
