Blueprint for success: the Gambian immunization programme.

Immunization in Gambia is a high priority. In order to initiate a viable program emphasis is concentrated on achieving a high quality of medical training and supervision to insure maximum understanding availability and formation of immunization service teams. This expanded program required installation monitoring maintenance and repair of cold units for the dispensing and supply of vaccines. A vaccine ordering system was developed to insure coverage for disbursement among Gambias population. Improvements were made in ordering systems inventory procedures vaccine form training and periodic review of staff. The program has shown an increased number of children immunized decreased morbidity and mortality rate and less occurrence of childhood diseases such as diphtheria and polio. The immunization programs convenient location in Gambia is considered an important aspect of its acceptability as part of the existing health care utilized.
