Metric-free definition of the energy momentum tensor: Gravitation with symmetric connection

A metric-free definition of the energy momentum tensor is presented. That definition can be used with any Lagrangian based gravitational theory where the independent variable is a symmetric connection. The case of Hilbert-Einstein gravitation is treated as an example of such a theory.
