Sustainable Bioremediation Strategies to Manage Environmental Pollutants

2021
The rapid escalation of ecosystem pollution by anthropogenic hazardous contaminants has been drawing the attention of environmentalists for effective solutions in remediation and ecosystem restoration. In recent decades, the discharge of wastewater effluents from treatment plants and the usage of xenobiotics have increased drastically, which inevitably contribute to the accumulation of large numbers of pollutants in the environment. The recalcitrant pollutants are bio-accumulative and deleterious in nature. Their accumulation has intensively affected the soil flora and fauna, and environmental health, which ultimately causes serious health problems in humans and animals. In this scenario, conventional technologies for pollutant management were found to be economically and technically challenging. As an alternative, bioremediation techniques are quite effective, economical, and easy to implement. This chapter addresses one of the most highlighted environmental issues, i.e., pollution, and provides an overview of diverse pollutants, versatile potential candidate domains, and efficient management techniques, i.e., bioremediation for the management of different environmental pollutants.
