Characteristics of lightning surges on distribution lines

An extensive collection of recordings of lighting-caused voltage and current waveforms on operating distribution lines is under way to help the utility industry better determine how to protect distribution circuits and equipment from these transients. This report on phase 1 of the project describes the technology developed for the study, the methodology used, and the results produced at Florida Power Corporation's system in Saint Petersburg, Florida.
