In recent years, art have been used as a common method for local regenerations. However, art that is not basedon understanding the characteristics of the place often result in only short-term effects and even leads to conflicts betweentourists and local residents. Therefore, for successful local regeneration, ‘placeness’ is becoming more important than ever. Theaim of this study is to identify how ‘placeness’ is integrated in art and architecture of Naoshima Island‘s Honmura region artprojects. The researchers used Edward Relph's three components of ‘placeness’ that are physical settings, activities, andmeanings to people as theoretical framework. Moreover, field observations of a total 8 cases were conducted for analysis. Theresults are as follows; firstly, characteristics and materials of local architecture were found as popular physical components usedin projects such as Minamidera, Gokaisho. Secondly, Honmura lounge can be defined as a place for activities to improve localeconomy and Kadoya as a representative project for residents' active participation, which are both very important for sustainabledevelopment of place.
