Contributions and Controversies of Preoperative DCE-Breast MRI

Since the 1990s when breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) began to be used in clinical practice, its role in clinical medicine has greatly evolved. In more recent years, there has been controversy on the benefits of performing breast MRI on patient’s newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Here we review recent literature focused on preoperative breast MRI which includes specific topics such as its benefit in certain age groups, tumor sizing, disease extent, histologic, and molecular subtypes as well as its effect on surgical planning and long-term outcomes with a brief review of new MR imaging techniques.
