MANHEIMIOSE EM OVELHA NO SEMIÁRIDO PARAIBANO: RELATO DE CASO

2009
MANNHEIMIOSIS IN SHEEP IN THE SEMIARID REGION OF PARAIBA: CASE REPORT Pasteurellosis in sheep leads to great economic losses in many parts of the world due to high mortality rates and reduction in weight gain. Mannheimia haemolytica – a bacterial agent previously known as Pasteurella haemolytica – causes mannheimiosis, which mainly affects the respiratory system. Pasteurella septicemia in association with pasteurella pneumonia and mastitis constitute another type of infection that frequently occurs in young sheep. The animal was attended to at the Veterinary Hospital of Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Paraiba State. It had recently aborted and clinical signs included apathy and hyporexia. After general physical examination, systemic antibiotics with anti-inflammatory effects were used as treatment based on the presumptive diagnosis of endometritis and acute clinical mastitis. At necropsy, fragments of the affected organs were collected for microbiological and histopathological examinations. Bacteriological findings revealed macroscopic lesions in all organs identified as Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica infection. Therefore, this study reports the risk factors as well as the clinical, pathological, and histological features of a sheep showing signs of Mannheimia haemolytica infection.
