Response to ‘Decision to reject screening for familial hypercholesterolaemia is flawed’ by Wald and Martin

We read the viewpoint1 with great interest and wish to make some important points in response. UK National Screening Committee (UKNSC) recommendations are provisional. They are revisited at planned intervals with flexibility applied when new evidence emerges. National Health Service England (NHSE) is planning a pilot evaluation of child–parent screening in 50 000 children aged 1–2 years old, and this could provide much-needed evidence for consideration. Recently, the UKNSC met with NHSE to discuss how the pilot could inform subsequent recommendations. A review of the ethical issues raised by child–parent screening involving a range of stakeholder groups was undertaken. A report of this work will be published shortly and we hope it will …
