بررسی ارتباط اعتیاد به اینترنت با سیگار و وضعیت تحصیلی در دانشجویان دانشگاه علوم پزشکی لرستان

Background : Widespread use of the Internet, lack of proper use and non-targeted searches, not only moves the students far from the main mission of the internet in the university but also will impact adversely on their academic status . The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between internet addiction with academic status and smoking in Lorestan University of Medical Sciences, Iran. Methods : This study was conducted on 368 students of Lorestan Medical University. A Yang standard internet addiction questionnaire was applied for data gathering and data was analyzed with t-test, ANOVA, Tukey, Mann Withney, Kruskal-Wallis, Eta and Spearman correlation coefficient in 0.05 significant level. Findings: From a total of 368 students that participated in the study, 163 patients (44.3%) were male and 205 (55.7%) were female. 63.3% of them had moderate dependency and 7.3% had a sever addiction to internet. All of the students with sever dependency had declined in academic status. There was a significant relation between decline in academic status and smoking with the mean score of internet addiction. It also showed a direct correlation between educational level and using internet. There was also an inverse relationship between average education level and internet using (P < 0.01). Conclusion: The prevalence of internet dependency in this study was concerning and it seems that the time for intervention to prevent physical and psychological effects of internet addiction has arrived.
