S06-01 Functional Analysis of Novel DISCI Binding Protein DBZ

2011
Methods: Hermeneutic interpretative phenomenology was utilised to explore the experiences and benefits older adults received from participating in peer support group programs. Results: The findings provided an understanding of the lived experience of older adults participating in groups and explored the relationship of this phenomenon to their health and sense of wellbeing. Group membership provided them with a social network of people and system of support. From the study the importance for clinicians to adequately explore the social domain when completing an assessment was highlighted. Conclusion: It is important for older people’s social world to be explored when undertaking a comprehensive assessment. By understanding the need for older adults to engage regularly in a peer support group, nurses and other health professionals can develop a greater appreciation of what issues are important for older people and what activities encourage positive ageing and promote feelings of psychological well-being. Where a social network is lacking endeavours should be made by clinicians to encourage a network system that will foster social support, positive mental health and recovery.
