Kidney function in early foetal life

It is a common opinion that some organs, in spite of the fact that they reach fully functional maturity during foetal life, nevertheless remain inactive until after birth. For instance, the lungs have no respiratory respiratory function in utero but are able to undertake gaseous exchange immediately after delivery.
