Postpartum Contraceptive Methods

1974
237 hospitals participated in an international program to determine whether it is feasible to provide family planning services in maternity hospitals. Between 1966 and 1971 48% of acceptors chose the IUD 34% chose oral contraceptive agents (OCAs) 9% chose sterilization and 8.5% chose condoms vaginal foams Depo-Provera or the diaphragm. Highest direct acceptance rates were in the Philippines Brazil and Honduras. This study provided data (47578 immediate insertions postpartum or postabortal) showing that immediate IUD insertions are safe and acceptable. Continuation rates for IUD acceptors averaged 78% at 12 months 65% at 24 months and 55% at 36 months; pill acceptors showed continuation rates of 55% 36% and 24% at the same intervals. The following recommendations are made: 1) all maternity patients should receive information about family planning 2) a special staff is necessary for implementing the program 3) the clinic should provide high quality care and be open at convenient times for patients and 4) a large choice of contraceptive methods should be available.
