Legends, legions and the Roman eagle
2020
Abstract A review of eagle remains from Roman Britain (AD43-410) was carried out, incorporating contextual information and historical records. Findings suggest that eagles occupied a socially symbolic role at many Roman sites. Specifically this included their incorporation in ritualised contexts at urban sites, and as mass-collections at military sites. The nature and potential social meanings of these deposits are considered.
