Una ciudadanía emergente: la de lxs trabajadorxs sexuales

2018
Built on the premise that “the prostitutes’ situation is the synthesis of women’s problem,” which reveals the hypocrisy of the social system, this article analyzes the organization process of the sexual workers in Mexico in order to be considered citizens with rights. The organization process of prostitutes in The United States, Europe, and Latin America is explored to finally approach the struggle by the sexual workers in Mexico City to achieve recognition for the labor nature of their job. It is concluded that, based on the certainty that the encouragement of social freedom is built on the respect for individual freedom, the struggle for their rights becomes present among sexual workers, who have become emerging political actors despite being traditionally deprived of the legal recognition of their job. By fulfilling their right to self-determination and defying stigma and discrimination, these workers have put into practice an unprecedented mode of shaping citizenship.
