Ab initio strategy for muon site assignment in wide band gap fluorides

Many appealingcharacteristics have determined the success of muon spinrotation/relaxationspectroscopy(µSR). Firstly, µSR sig-nificantly widens the classes of materials that can bestudied if compared to other spectroscopic techniques(like NMR and ESR for example) since it can be appliedto virtually any specimen by simply implanting muons.Secondly, during its lifetime the muon spin interacts withmagnetic orders of either nuclear or electronic origin, andprovides information on local magnetic fields on a smalllength scale and - when fluctuating regimes are involved -on a large frequency window.
