Body fat distribution and insulin resistance index in type 2 diabetes mellitus

2011
Objective To investigate the influence of body fat distribution on insulin resistence index in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods Two hundred and forty-eight patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were enrolled in this study.Height, body weight, waist circumference, abdominal circumference, hip circumference, fasting blood glucose,2 hour postprandial blood glucose, fasting insulin,HbA1c,serum total cholesterol, serum triglyceride, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol were determined;body mass index(BMI),waist-hip ratio(WHR) and insulin resistance index were calculated. The relations between BMI,WHR,lipid metabolism and insulin resistance were studied. Results Insulin resistance index in obesity group was significantly higher than that in non-obesity group(P0.05),and the insulin resistance index were essentially similar between patients with metabolically-obese normal weight and patients with peripheral type obesity. This suggested that insulin resistance index increases with the increase of body fat,no matter it is overall or regional. Conclusions In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance index increases with the increase of body fat,no matter it is overall or regional.
