Clustering-Based Technique to Defend DDoS Attacks in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

2020
MANET (mobile ad hoc network) is a collection of self-organizing mobile devices that communicates to each other wirelessly. There exist many clustering techniques in MANETs that can be used for creation of clusters and selection of cluster heads. Selection of cluster heads offers many benefits like low energy consumption, increasing stability, efficiency of MANETs, routing efficiency etc. Weight-based clustering is chosen for the formation of clusters and selection of cluster heads to be further used in the proposed clustering based DDoS defense model. Weight-based clustering algorithm considers the mobility, degree of mobile nodes, battery and transmission power of mobile devices during the formation of clusters. The coefficients w1, w2, w3, and w4 are used in weight calculations and the sum of these coefficients will be 1. The values assigned to these coefficients should be such that the higher value can be assigned to factor having higher importance. The clustering algorithm identified and selected for the creation of clusters and the selection of cluster heads is used to test the effectiveness of proposed clustering based DDoS defense mechanism. The brief process to be used in the DDoS defense is also discussed here.
