The article considers current state of the power quality in power supply systems. It also pays attention to consequences which come after deterioration of power quality. Special attention is paid to highest harmonic components of current and voltage which is the most complex element for engineering evaluation. After analyzing works on power quality improvement article systematizes basic negative processes concomitant to highest harmonics in power networks and reasons which cause sinusoidal distortion of a nonlinear voltage. In conclusion the analysis is made of current technical means used for power quality improvement and the accent is put on active harmonic filter. Also directions are determined in which these technical means must be developed.
