Height and diameter variation in twelve white ash provenance/progeny tests in eastern United States

1991
Results from 12- and 13-year old rangewide provenance/progeny tests of white ash (Fraxinus americana L.) planted at 12 locations throughout the eastern United States are reported. Although heritability of white ash tree height and dbh is high at both the provenance and family levels, the trend in variance components is for increasing provenance and declining family components. Tree height is negatively correlated with latitude in southern outplantings and positively correlated with latitude in the north. Plantations with the tallest trees were those that had been clean cultivated for several years after establishment.
